First off, I have to say that I’m in love with our house. It’s everything and more we dreamed about during those long months of preparation. But man, does buying a home do a number on the finances. Since paying off my credit card debt and starting my method of using my rewards card for all my spending, I’ve loosened up on the day to day budgeting. It worked well for a while and was quite freeing. I felt I’d earned it. But now, with all the little things that come up both for myself and the house? I’m way off track. I have to come clean… Over the past few months both before and after the home purchase, I’ve been raiding my savings like there’s no tomorrow. It boils down to overspending – nothing huge, just inattention to the details, giving in to immediate gratification, and just plain impulse buying. It’s time to buckle down and pay attention!
Cute Man and I like to keep our finances separate. It’s not about trust, it’s about control. It’s just easier to keep track of one set of in and outflows and just negotiate the common expenses. This is what works for us. Now, with the house, we have had to realign who pays what and sorting out all that has really been a reality check. The bills! They’re killer! Savings, what’s that??? After the panic subsided, we came up with a plan that will keep us on track and allow us to continue saving a little bit, at least. As long as I keep a handle on my discretionary spending, I’ll be OK. I’m lucky as hell to still HAVE any discretionary spending money at all. It just has to remain a very finite amount if we’re to stay on track with our short and long term goals.
If I was able to keep up my debt repayment while working at the salon for peanuts per hour (with Cute Man’s major support!) I can do this. I have the incredible perk of being able to go home and enjoy the fruits of all this effort every single night. It is truly a wonderful thing to go home to our house every evening and spend time with Cute Man. It’s nice to have a tangible reminder of what we’re working toward – maintaining and building our happy life and future together.

Dietary cholesterol reduces the risk of heart disease
This post includes a summary of a paper published in Current Atherosclerosis Reports 2010 Aug 4 and a recipe for lobby.
Study title and authors:
Revisiting Dietary Cholesterol Recommendations: Does the Evidence Support a Limit of 300 mg/d?
Maria Luz Fernandez and Mariana Calle
This paper can be accessed at: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20683785
In this review Fernandez found:
(a) Current epidemiologic data have clearly demonstrated that increasing concentrations of dietary cholesterol are not correlated with increased risk for heart disease.
(b) Dietary cholesterol reduces circulating levels of (the dangerous) small, dense LDL cholesterol particles, thereby lowering the risk of heart disease.
Professor Fernandez suggests the guidelines for dietary cholesterol should be revisited

Professor Fernandez is an Associate Editor of The Journal of Nutrition.
Professor Fernandez notes that the perceived association between dietary cholesterol and risk for coronary heart disease has resulted in recommendations of no more than 300 mg/d for healthy persons in the United States. These dietary recommendations proposed in the 1960s had little scientific evidence other than the known association between saturated fat and cholesterol and animal studies where cholesterol was fed in amounts far exceeding normal intakes.

Aspartame may induce learning and memory difficulties
This post includes a summary of a study published in Pharmacological Research 2006 Jan;53(1):1-5 and a recipe for shrimp and celery.
This study can be accessed at: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16129618
The study found that high concentrations of aspartame remarkably decreased enzyme activity which may lead to neurological symptoms, including learning and memory difficulties.
More information on this subject: Books : Scientific Studies : Other Websites : Videos : Food Mall
Recipe of the day
Shrimp and Celery
Ingredients:
◦1/2 c chicken, beef or veggie stock
◦6 slices bacon
◦1/2 onion
◦2 gloves garlic
◦1 T tomato paste
◦1 T chili garlic sauce
◦1 T minced thyme
◦S&P
Method:
Cut the ends off the celery roots and slice the skin off. Slice the root into 1/3′s, then rotate and slice into thick sticks, then slice into rough squares. Toss the roots into a pot of salted water and boil until softened, about 10 minutes. Get out your blender and place the roots inside, along with the stock and 2 T of bacon fat from the saute pan. Pulse until you reach a smooth consistency. Stir it around and/or add more stock if the mixture isn’t cooperating. S&P to your liking.
Cook your bacon in a saute pan. Once it’s browned, remove the bacon and crumble. Add the onion and garlic to the pan. Saute until softened, about 6 minutes. Add the shrimp, tomato paste, thyme, crumbled bacon and hot sauce. Cook until the shrimp have turned pink.
Place the celery into a bowl, add shrimp, crumbled bacon and many, many spoonfuls of the tomato gravy.

Public health policy should be one that emphasizes food and diet, NOT one that emphasizes nutrient supplements
Published in JAMA. 2005;294:351-358.
Essential Nutrients: Food or Supplements? Where Should the Emphasis Be?
Alice H. Lichtenstein, DSc; Robert M. Russell, MD
Jean mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging, Tufts University, Boston, Mass.
This paper can be accessed at: http://jama.ama-assn.org/cgi/content/abstract/294/3/351
The author reports, "The consumption of adequate levels and proper balance of essential nutrients is critical for maintaining health. The identification, isolation, and purification of nutrients in the early 20th century raised the possibility that optimal health outcomes could be realized through nutrient supplementation. Recent attempts using this approach for cardiovascular disease and lung cancer have been disappointing, as demonstrated with vitamin E and beta carotene. Moreover, previously unrecognized risks caused by nutrient toxicity and nutrient interactions have surfaced during intervention studies. The most promising data in the area of nutrition and positive health outcomes relate to dietary patterns, not nutrient supplements. These data suggest that other factors in food or the relative presence of some foods and the absence of other foods are more important than the level of individual nutrients consumed. Finally, unknown are the implications on public health behavior of shifting the emphasis away from food toward nutrient supplements. Notwithstanding the justification for targeting recommendations for nutrient supplements to certain segments of the population (eg, the elderly), there are insufficient data to justify an alteration in public health policy from one that emphasizes food and diet to one that emphasizes nutrient supplements".
